The wonderful talents of Bristol-based Laura Kidd, with her solo project She Makes War, release a special Limited Edition CD covering 80's hit 'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me' by Boy George's Culture Club.
We can always expect the unexpected with Laura's work. The repertoire moves between lilting acoustic ballads and contrasting indie rock grunge. So what will this bring, I wonder?!
The exclusive package, with two pressings done, included 'vinyl looking' CD's, available in either black or white, 50 of each, alongside the 2017 release of 'I Want My Country Back'
Laura says "Yes - *that* song! I'd describe it as sounding like The Breeders produced by Trent Reznor. You'll be able to stream it on all digital platforms from the release date but trust me, you're going to love this! In a time when hard fought for freedoms are in danger of being reversed and eroded and people still live in fear of persecution and violence every day for the “crime” of being themselves, it’s not enough for straight white liberals to pat themselves on the back for not being part of the problem - it’s way beyond time we become active allies. This single is a celebration of individuality, a tribute to an inspirational performer and my deliciously dark take on a bloody brilliant pop song”

After the excitement of waiting for the postie to drop this eagerly anticipated parcel, I opened the envelope and removed the contents!
The old school style photograph of a young Laura was a sweet touch and inside the slipcase and plastic insert, was my hand numbered (70/100) and signed black vinyl effect CD.. Very impressed!
If you love the original version of DYRWTHM, then be prepared for something completely different! Laura gives the most dark and sinister intro, that runs creepily through the first verse. The full ensemble of grungy guitar, bass and synth (all played by Laura) kick in for the chorus with a heavy, gothic backbeat (Dan Whitfield) smacking you down all at the same time. It feels very oppressive but at the same, your mind takes you back to that happy, trippy pop anthem. The mix really works well in my opinion and I love it!
Then onto I Want My Country Back. If you haven't heard it already then I suggest you do! What at first seems like an upbeat, happy singalong indie anthem lies sewn within the angry lyrics and political rants of Laura's frustration at Great Britain's government leaders and press. She says it's a protest against the liars, cheats and scoundrels running our country, both from the Conservative Government and from the right wing press. Sadly, it didn't change the world, but it brought feelings of hope and solidarity to me and some of you, and that's something worth fighting for.
Lets make Britain great....!
