One For Sorrow EP - Josh Beddis

John Winser (Gigs N Trigs)

October 30th 2019 saw the release of Pembrokeshire's self-confessed 'hilly billy troubadour's EP 'One For Sorrow'

Gigs N Trigs HQ had an early listen and is now of course, widely available across most music platforms and physical CD's!

Check out my review below....!

Josh Beddis is a singer/songwriter from West Wales and the latest artist to rise from the flames of the ever growing Country music and Americana scene that seems to be rapidly growing in the Welsh regions.

He grew up listening to traditional country music such as Hank Williams, Don Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson & Marty Robbins in his grandads kitchen.

Those influences hit home as soon as first track, 'The Old House' strums acoustically into your ears. Josh has a wonderful voice and epitomises everything that is great in a good old story-telling country song.

'City Lights' is not so much a longing to be in the concrete jungles and part of the rat race but quite the opposite and something I can totally relate to! Love it.

"Now I miss that country air and how I long to be back there,

Far away from the city lights, lay me down in an open sky"

'If I'm Dreaming' brings an ethereal sound, which is highlighted by the wonderful tones of the harmonica, played by Josh's dad, John. There's a huge feeling of sadness and melancholy in this track that makes it all the more beautiful.

That hillybilly troubadour sure has such an emotive voice and you feel every memory, every emotion and gives you an amazing sense of nostalgia.

His first track release was in April last year, ‘At The End Of The Day’. It’s a great song and true to the ‘original’ style of country music. I originally posted it out as 'With a whisky chaser in one hand and this track playing through the speakers....is absolute bliss!' See my previous write up here!

'Moving On' was released shortly after that and this EP continues in the same vain...

'She Sleeps Among The Bluebells & The Pines' is just stunning. The sadness and melancholic tragedy of this track pulls at the heart strings and hits you right where its supposed to. Beautiful.

And suddenly and sadly, we reach the end of the EP. But not without bowing out with a truly epic song 'The River'

Josh Beddis has come up with a blinding EP here, which only highlights the songwriting talents he has. Backed up by the perfect accompaniment of the aforementioned John Beddis, John Rodge on double bass and the wonderful vocals of Jodie Marie.

Difficult to pick a favourite track and it was a close call with If I'm Dreaming and She Sleeps..but in the end it goes to the pure escapism of City Lights

And as Mr. T says as part of Josh's ad build up, I pity the fool who doesn't hear this...!
